Pets should always look their best. The fur should exude a healthy sheen while the nails should be cut to a reasonable length. And he should smell good, too! After all, a well-groomed pet is most likely a healthy pet. Pets know this and have figured out a way to keep clean. They have their own grooming technique. A dog can roll on the ground and chew on a mat that's tangled in his fur. A cat can spend all day licking her fur until she feels reasonably clean. But that's not enough.

Be Touchy. Sometimes a pet struggles when being held because it's not used to being handled. So make it a habit to touch your dog as part of your time together. Touch and pet him, especially in areas which are particularly sensitive. These include the belly, behind the ears, the tail, the feet and back.
Keep it short and Sweet. At least during the first few sessions, when your pet is not yet used to the grooming. 5 to 10 minutes ought to do the trick. Then when your pet is used to your fussing and attention, you can slowly extend the time.
Let Your Admiration Be Heard. Pets love to hear praises, so be sure to compliment him loudly. He will love it, especially after he has been good and sat quietly while your groom him.
Grooming time is not play time. Sometimes, pets feel playful when you are grooming them. Although you want your pet to enjoy grooming, it should not be treated as playtime, or else your pet will always fool around during your sessions. Also, don't let him think that your grooming tools are toys.
Start 'em Young. When you start grooming your pet while they are young, they will naturally submit to your fussing even when they grow bigger.
